WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME

DURATION: March 2018 - Now

FUNDING: Comic Relief and the Scottish Government, NIUM

PARTNERS: Resonate, Faraja Rwanda, Impanuro Girls Initiative.

OVERVIEW: The programme empowers marginalised women around the stadium, aged 18-30. They develop agency and a leadership mindset, gain critical family planning and sexual health knowledge, and learn how to start small businesses. On graduating, they form savings teams, which helps them access capital to start businesses and increase their income. Cricket games support throughout the programme, bonding participants and reinforcing the messages from each module.

"Before this programme, I was a housewife. Staying at home, cooking and only taking care of the children. After, I learnt that anyone could use the little money he or she has and start making a living. I used the knowledge from the programme and 10,000 RWF from the saving group and started a small business by selling food in the market.”
